Perọtto, Niccolò, italienischer Humanist, * Fano 1429, ✝ Sassoferrato (bei Fabriano) 14. 12. 1480; war Schüler Vittorinos da Feltre, Guarinos von Verona, L. Vallas, seit 1447 Sekretär von Kardinal Bessarion in Rom, übersetzte 1449-54 für Papst Nikolaus V. u. a. erstmals Epiktet und Polybios ins Lateinische, hielt 1452 in Bologna die Begrüßungsrede auf Kaiser Friedrich III., der ihn dafür zum Dichter krönte, wurde 1458 Erzbischof von Siponto und war zeitweise auch päpstlicher Gouverneur in Süditalien. Der streitbare Philologe (u. a. gegen G. F. Poggio Bracciolini, Georg von Trapezunt) wurde in Europa durch zahlreiche Drucke seiner metrischen Schriften (1453, gedruckt 1471), der ersten neuzeitlichen Schulgrammatik »Rudimenta grammatices« (1468, gedruckt 1473) sowie des umfänglichen Martial-Kommentars »Cornucopiae« (1478, gedruckt 1489) bekannt.
